8 Natural ways to boost your immune system

Your immune system is your body’s line of defense, when you get sick whether it’s a virus or bacteria, these little guys are your brave soldiers who go to battle for you. When the body senses the presence of a foreign entity, your body’s little army does it’s best to kick it out. If you ever see this old Chris Rock movie, Osmosis Jones then you have an idea. I’m not a doctor so that’s what I think of when I think of my immune system.
As we are facing this global threat, we are all doing what we can to be safe and stay healthy and helping our bodies have the best fighting chance possible. Now more than ever we need a strong immune system.
Taking good care of ourselves is something we should already be doing on a daily basis. But we all forget to take care of ourselves sometimes, if there was ever a time to practice self-care it is now.

These tips will not only help strengthen your immune system, they will also help with your mental health.

Drink water

your body needs enough water to function, right now you can’t afford to be nursing any kinda cold and flu symptoms. You need to help your body flush bad stuff out and replenish. Staying hydrated goes a long way in keeping you healthy

Eat your fruits and vegetable

Good food is the best medicine. Try to increase your fruits and vegetable intake, leafy greens are great antioxidants, citrus fruits contain vitamin C. Basically any whole foods that haven’t been processed is a good bet.

Take your vitamins

Don’t forget to take your vitamins! I am almost 95% sure that most responsible adults have a jar of multivitamins on their counter, we know we need them, we buy them but we forget to take them. Now is not the time to be forgetting. Take your vitamins!

Although I say to eat your fruits and vegetables, I know many of us won’t be able to eat as much as we should. Face it, whole nutritious fruits and vegetables are expensive and even the healthiest eater can’t possibly eat all the necessary nutrients on a daily basis. So vitamins fill the voids where the foods lack.
So don’t forget to take your vitamins.

Scale back on sweets, fats and greasy food
Right now your body needs to focus on keeping you healthy, don’t give it anymore unnecessary work to do. Sugar and processed food take a toll on the body, your kidneys have to work harder to filter all that trash. All these bad stuff are slowing down your metabolism and weakening your immune system. I understand panic, and being stuck at home might drive a lot of us to stress-eat sugary snacks and process stuff. We need to be strong, this is not about gaining weight or anything like that, your health depends on it. Try to stay away from that stuff as much as you can.

Exercise

This is a doozy, right now we are being asked to stay home as much as possible, Gyms are nasty so a lot of our exercise routine might fall by the wayside but don’t let it. There are exercise programs you can do at home, you can start a little garden, you can get moving in your home. I once saw a news report on a little old lady who got her 10000 daily steps just walking back and forth in her living room.
Your body needs the exercise just as much we need to wash our hands.

Get some sun

We have to be cooped up inside for God knows how long, I am optimistic and praying this thing is over soon but it might get worse before it gets better.

Make an effort to go outside and get some sun whether it’s spending time in the garden, drawing chalk on your driveway with the kids, jumping rope, kicking a ball… make it a point to head outside and get some sun!

Get some sleep

I know we are in a crisis and have a lot to worry about, you may be struggling with insomnia. This is the last thing we need because our body needs sleep and rest to stay healthy. So you might need to make some changes in your routine to ensure you are getting enough sleep. Maybe back off the coffee for a little bit? I know this is a big ask but for me whenever i have trouble with sleep, coffee is usually the culprit. You can maybe skip some days, have your coffee early in the morning and not throughout the day.

Drink soothing tea, take melatonin, take breaks from devices and bad news cycles, read something positive, journal etc… whatever works for you. Find ways to get some sleep!

Laugh I mean it! Just laugh!

Seriously, just laugh! This is when the cat videos will come in handy. Don’t let yourself get consumed by the news cycles. The bible say in proverbs that

“A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.”
While you need to stay informed and know what’s going on, watching the news around the clock is actually hurting your health.

Find ways to laugh, tell corny jokes, play funny games, watch comedies, anything that lighten the mood is actually helping your health.

I pray for our safety and health, I pray for this crisis to be over soon.
Be safe my friends!
