I’m a result person, I love projects I can finish! I like to go hard and be able to see what I have accomplished. It makes me happy. Unfortunately not everything can be a short two weeks project you can finish and quickly bask in the glory of a finished task.
I love sprints! I don’t mind putting in the hard work when I can see the finish line. I get discouraged when working on a long dragging goal that never seems to get done. I lose momentum easily, because you see the months just getting smoosh together, before you know I’m looking back at years and decades. The days go by so fast, and that feeling of “What have I done with life?” can be so daunting.
But most goals are marathons not sprints. You have to pace yourself, see what you can accomplish in a month instead of the whole year.
By doing it that way, at the end of the year even if you did one thing for each month you would have twelve accomplished goals in the bag at the end of the year.
Now How do you make sure your month is an awesome one?
Here are four things you can do to make your months even more awesome!
First off: Keep working! You’re doing a better job than you give yourself credit for. You didn’t make it this far sitting on your hands, you’re gonna be OK! Don’t sweat it, keep pushing. As long as you don’t quit, you ARE winning! Take time to celebrate small wins, no matter how small.
For instance, if you’re in school celebrate a good grade on a paper, as a mom I can celebrate getting the kids to bed on time. In kindergarten we used to get gold stars for doing the most mundane things and it the best thing! The more you get a star the more you want to do the things that earned you that star. Sometimes we just need to go back to being a kid. In a lot of ways kindergartners got the secrets of life figured out. They play, eat lunch, they take naps and get gold stars. All the things we need as adults to avoid burnouts.
So take a page from a kindergartners’ book.
Speak Life because your life will take the direction of your words.
Choose your words wisely, give yourself grace. Encourage yourself! Start saying things like “I am able”, “I can”
Your brain doesn’t know any better, tell it how to feel instead of letting it tell you how to feel. You got this
Journal your life because history matters. Some days you will need to rehearse a past victory to be able to make it through today’s struggle. Remember David and Goliath? When he was faced with these giants he pulled out an old victory, he remembered how he slayed the lion and the bear, to remind himself if he was able to make it in the face of a lion and a bear he can win in the face of the giant Goliath.
Go after your dreams: Execute your ideas, if you fail you will learn something. Do at least one thing that will put you closer to your goals. Stop thinking about it and start doing something about it. You will never know until you try! Again, if you fail you will still learn something. Thomas Edison said “ haven’t failed — I’ve just found 10,000 that won’t work.”
So go ahead, finish that degree, write that book, start the business! Go after your dream, even if it’s just one step, that will be step closer that you were last month.
Don’t overthink it, take it from a chronic over thinker, it’s usually not as big as your thoughts make it out to be. Take a leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone and do something you would have never done.
Now go ahead and take the pledge, promise yourself to do something that will put you closer to you awesomeness.
